My Grandmother, My Mother, and Me: Trends in the Economic Status of Black Women

Professor Cecilia Conrad, Vice President and Dean of the College at Pomona College, will give the fifth annual Two Icons Lecture on race and gender. Professor Conrad is the Stedman-Sumner Professor of Economics at Pomona College. She serves as editor of "The Review of Black Political Economy" and an associate editor of "Feminist Economics." She is a former president of the National Economic Association, and a former board member of the Committee on the Status of Women in the Economics Profession.

Dr. Joan Saab, Associate Professor of Art History/Visual and Cultural Studies and Chair of the Department of Art and Art History, will share her research. Dr. Saab's work explores the place of immigrant women in delineating an alternative narrative of American modernism. The paper is part of a new book project for Dr. Saab that explores the place of “craft” in the early twentieth century art world, particularly as it relates to institutions of fine art and the changing American marketplace. Jennifer Boylan: A Life in Two Genders

Professor Jennifer Boylan is the author of twelve books, including "She's Not There: a Life in Two Genders," and "I'm Looking Through You: Growing Up Haunted," both published by Random House. A novelist, memoirist, and short story writer, she is also a nationally known advocate for civil rights. Jenny has appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show, Live with Larry King, the Today Show, the Barbara Walters Special, NPR's Marketplace and Talk of the Nation; she has also been the subject of documentaries on CBS News' 48 Hours. and The History Channel. She is a regular contributor to the op/ed page of the New York Times and Conde Nast Traveler magazine. Since 1988, she has been Professor of English at Colby College in Maine; in 2010, she was the Hoyer-Updike Distinguished Writer at Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pennsylvania. A Celebration of the Life of Lynn D. Gordon

The University community comes together to celebrate Lynn D. Gordon. Dr. Gordon, professor emerita of history at the University of Rochester and a scholar of gender, education, ethnicity, and diplomacy, died Feb. 9 after a long struggle with cancer. She was 65.

This scholarly symposium is in honor of Lynn Gordon. Dr.Gordon passed away on February 9, 2012 after a long battle with cancer. She was well known for her pioneering study of women in higher education at the turn of the century. She was a valued member of both the Warner School of Education, where she served as associate dean and director of graduate studies, and the Department of History, where she taught a wide range of courses on the United States, Europe, and the Middle East. Kearns Center for Leadership and Diversity in the Arts, Sciences, and Engineering at the University of Rochester for a screening of "Latina Confessions" (“What does it mean to be Latina in the U.S.?”) and a discussion with the filmmaker, Louie E. Perego Moreno. Featured as one of New York’s top 25 Latinos by "El Diario de la Prensa" for his community work over the last 20 years, Louis E. Perego Moreno, a/k/a TIO LOUIE is a motivational speaker and documentary filmmaker. For over 15 years he has incorporated his documentaries in presentations at colleges and universities throughout the United States. For 30 years he has been recognized nationally as a Latino multimedia-maker and educator who produces documentaries, television programming and advertising commercials featuring Latinos, Blacks, Women, Urban Youth and LGBT.

Viral Voyages, or AIDS as an Epidemic of Globalization

Lina Meruana's talk, "Viral Voyages, or AIDS as an Epidemic of Globalization," will situate the global AIDS crisis as it has been read and represented in post colonial terms in Latin America, showing that AIDS metaphors produced early on in the US travelled far and were repeated, reappropriated, and critically examined by homosexual writers from the south. Meruana is Latin American fiction writer and scholar with an interest in 20th-Century Latin American Literature (Fiction and Non-Fiction), Representations of Disease, Gender Studies and Feminisms, and Global & Local Debates in Latin American Literature. She teaches Latin American Cultures in the Liberal Studies Program and writing workshops in the MFA in Creative Writing in Spanish at New York University.

Janet Heidinger Kafka Prize Presentation and Reading with Author Amy Waldman

The Department of English and the Susan B. Anthony Institute will present author Amy Waldman with the 36th Annual Janet Heidinger Kafka Prize for Fiction. Waldman will give a reading from her winning novel, The Submission, and be available for a book signing after the event. An hors d'oeuvres reception will follow the reading. Copies of The Submission will be available to purchase at the event. Among its many accolades, The Submission was named a New York Times Notable Book for 2011 and Esquire‘s Book of the Year in 2011. Waldman was a reporter for The New York Times for eight years, including three as co-chief of the New Delhi bureau. She was also a national correspondent for the Atlantic . Waldman is a graduate of Yale University and has been a fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study and at the American Academy in Berlin. This event is free and open to the public. About the film: "Violence erupted at a street dance on a hot July night when a routine arrest took a turn for the worse – and ended when the National Guard was called to a northern city for the first time during the civil rights era. July ’64 gives voice to the people who lived it, and tells the story of three days of conflict and unrest that altered the course of history in Rochester, New York."

"Women, Population, and the U.N. Millenium Development Goals" Keynote Address

Jane Roberts will give her keynote talk at the Undergraduate Research Conference on Gender and Women's studies. Her talk is titled "Women, Population, and the U.N. Millennium Development Goals." Roberts is visiting New York State to address the United Nations Association of Rochester and the American Association of University Women's state convention. Roberts and her friend Lois Abraham started a grassroots movement in 2002 called "34 Million Friends of the United Nations Population Fund (UNPF)" to ensure the humanity and rights of women and girls across the world. Their effort has raised over $4 million, and they were recognized in 2005 with a Nobel Peace Prize nomination. In 2005, Roberts published a memoir titled 34 Million Friends (of the women of the world) about her experiences fighting for social justice with Abraham. Out in Reel Film Series Screening and Panel Discussion of 575 Castro Street

"575 Castro Street" is a short film by Jenni Olson that was commissioned by FilmInFocus.com to be showcased online in conjunction with the theatrical release of "Milk." The film reveals the play of light and shadow upon the walls of the Castro Camera Store set for Gus Van Sant’s film. The audio track is an edited version of the 13-minute cassette that Harvey Milk recorded in his camera shop a few weeks after his election to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, which made him one of the first openly gay elected officials in the United States. Labeled simply: “In-Case” the tape was to be played, “in the event of my death by assassination.” Following the screening, a panel of community members, students, faculty, and staff will address the changing nature of the LGBTQ movement what the future holds for today's young activists. First Annual Rainbow Lecture with William Eskridge, Jr.

The first annual Rainbow Lecture on LGBTQI issues will feature William Eskridge, Jr., John A. Garver Professor of Jurisprudence, Yale Law School. Eskridge has defended same-sex marriage both in the court room and as a scholar. Among his many publications, he co-authored the leading casebook on sexuality issues in law, "Sexuality, Gender, and the Law," as well as the important monograph, "Gaylaw: Challenging the Apartheid of the Closet." Eskridge’s most recent book, "Gay Marriage: For Better or For Worse?," examines gay marriage and society in Scandinavia, where gay couples have been able to marry since 1989.

Learn about the life and work of Bayard Rustin, a visionary strategist, activist, and the unknown hero of the civil rights movement. These are stories of survivors -- sometimes bitter, but just as often filled with irony and humor; tortured by their memories, yet infused with a powerful will to endure.

Jos Truitt, blogger on feministing.com and speaker on feminism, reproductive health, grassroots organizing, and transgender issues will give a lecture about using a gender analysis approach to feminism by taking a critical look at how gender is often missing from feminist thought and politics. Truitt will also discuss how transgender issues are central to feminism and how transgender frames can sharpen feminist analysis. She will explore ways in which gender intersects with other identity categories, as well as the challenges and complexities of navigating both a personal experience approach and broader identity-based critique in the work for gender justice.
