Undergraduate student Ashkay Lakharam accepted into fieldwork program sponsored by NSF grant at UB

Third-year linguistics undergraduate student Ashkay Lakharam was recently accepted to conduct fieldwork this June in Mauritius as part of the University at Buffalo's International Research Experiences for Students program, funded through a National Science Foundation grant. The principle investigator is Assistant Professor of Linguistics Dr. Fabiola Henri (UB) in collaboration with Dr. Shrimata Hassamal from the Mauritius Institute of Education. During his trip, he and five other students will be collaborating with both researchers and native speakers of Mauritian Creole to obtain data and develop analyses of the language. Ashkay plans to conduct a cross-creole comparative analysis of Mauritian Creole in hopes of understanding the mechanisms of generation, creolisation, and nativisation across creoles. He would like to thank faculty members Nadine Grimm, Maya Abtahian, and J.C. Wamsley for their constant support and encouragement.
