About the School of Arts & Sciences
Combining breadth and depth—that’s the hallmark of the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) at the University of Rochester.
With 19 departments, more than a dozen programs, and numerous centers and institutes, Arts and Sciences is the largest school at the University. This is true in terms of the number of academic programs offered and the number of undergraduates enrolled in those programs.
Moreover, we continue to expand, enhance, and raise the profiles of our programs and scholarly offerings in the arts and humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences.
Some examples within or involving the School of Arts & Sciences include the:
- Goergen Institute for Data Science, a $100 million project to harness the power of data to transform knowledge, discovery, and innovation
- Humanities Center, the University’s interdisciplinary home base of scholars in the humanities and humanistic social sciences
- Institute for the Performing Arts, which combines the University’s rich history of performing arts programs with the local and regional arts communities
Such initiatives build upon the expertise of our nationally and internationally recognized faculty, scholars, and educators. They also reflect the vested interests and invaluable input of University leadership, staff, supporters, students, and alumni.
Our ultimate goal? To embody the University’s motto of making the world “ever better.”
