About

The Barnes Computing Center (BCC) provides computer and network management and support, as well as web and application development, for the teaching, research and administrative activities of the Department of Physics and Astronomy.

The BCC maintains a Gigabit network backbone within the Bausch and Lomb building consisting of roughly 350 different networked devices. The Department is connected to the campus backbone over a 1Gbps link to the main campus.

Support is provided for PC and Macintosh hardware running diverse operating systems including Unix, Linux (RedHat, Fedora, Ubuntu), FreeBSD, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows 7 ,Windows 8, and Mac OS X. Currently, the BCC Staff maintains a number of Linux and OS X servers aiming to provide the department the most ubiquitous computing environment possible. The BCC offers all Department members facilities for reading email, browsing the Internet, accessing news groups and performing numerical computations.

The BCC maintains a general use computer facility on the fourth floor of Bausch and Lomb Hall. The facility provides general access for Department members to Mac and Windows-based machines equipped with a variety of software for text editing, graphics, and mathematical calculation. Color printing and optical scanning are also available.

The BCC provides technical support for the Department's video conferencing facilities.

The staff offers purchasing advice and purchases hardware, software, and peripherals on behalf of Department members.

In addition, the BCC provides large format printing to both the Physics and Astronomy Department, and to the general University community.

The BCC operates as a part of the Sydney W. Barnes Research Laboratory of the Department of Physics and Astronomy.
