Physics, Optics and Astronomy (POA) Library
The POA library, located on the third floor of Bausch & Lomb Hall, houses a comprehensive collection of journals, monographs, and online data bases, supporting the research and teaching activities of the department.
The POA is the center hub for our students, who conduct both individual and collaborative research in the space, which is specifically designed for scientific learning.
C.E.K. Mees Observatory
The department's C.E.K. Mees Astronomical Observatory helps support faculty and student research and student learning. The observatory also offers free tours to the public on during set times over the summer.

Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE)
The LLE is an on campus laboratory for research on inertial confinement fusion, and high energy density plasma. Visit the LLE site to learn more.
Mechanical Shop
The mechanical shop located on the first floor of Bausch and Lomb Hall provides prototypes and the ability to manufacture a wide variety of devices in support of the College’s research and teaching efforts.
The Mechanical Shop is staffed by an expert machinist and a professional mechanical designer. Fabrication capabilities include:
- Fully computerized milling machine (CNC)
- Variety of high-precision mills and lathes
- Soldering and welding facilities
- Advanced sheet metal working equipment
- Diamond saws
In addition to advanced design and construction capabilities, the Mechanical Shop also offers training courses for students at all levels who are involved in the mechanical arts of experimental research.

Barnes Computing Center
The Barnes Computing Center (BCC) located in Bausch & Lomb Hall, provides support and management for the department's extensive network of workstation, Macintosh, and PC computers. A public work-room provides access to all types of platforms, color printing, and an optical scanner.
The BCC also:
- Provides technical support for departmental video conferencing
- Offers purchasing advice
- Purchases hardware, software, and peripherals
- Provides large format printing to the department and University community—visit the poster print services page
