About the Noll Lab

The Noll Lab, founded by Dr. Jennie Noll, is based at Mt. Hope Family Center, University of Rochester. In addition to serving as PI of our lab, Dr. Noll also serves as Executive Director of Mt. Hope Family Center. Read more about Dr. Noll here.

What is our research about?

The Noll Lab conducts trans-disciplinary research informed by public health, developmental psychopathology, and biopsychosocial approaches. Our research applies various longitudinal approaches, including prospective, cross-sequential designs to understand lifespan sequelae of child sexual abuse across multiple levels of analysis. Our research underscores childhood maltreatment as a key public health issue, while also applying strengths-based approaches that highlight heterogeneity and potential sources of resilience. In addition to conducting basic science research on the health and psychosocial consequences of child sexual abuse, our lab also emphasizes translational research. Our translational research consists of 1) community-partnered clinical research on primary prevention of child sexual abuse and 2) policy-relevant research to advocate for maltreatment prevention at federal, state, and local levels.

What is our impact?

Dr. Noll’s lab contributes key knowledge across several areas, such as:
  • Research from our lab has revolutionized scientific understanding of biological embedding of stress following early chronic adversity
  • Prior publications from our lab highlight child sexual abuse as a uniquely traumagenic and “reactive” adverse childhood experience, associated with devastating consequences across domains of cognitive functioning, psychopathology, interpersonal functioning, and health
  • Dr. Noll’s research on primary child sexual abuse prevention has been shown to produce population level reductions in child sexual abuse
  • Our research has fostered connections between scientists and local community organizations, especially local Child Advocacy Centers
  • Read more about how our research supports the Boundless Possibilities outlined in the University of Rochester Strategic Plan

Our ultimate goal is to conduct evidence-based research that can be leveraged to support individuals affected by maltreatment and prevent child abuse in our communities and beyond.
