Humanities Center Postdoctoral Fellow Richard Fadok is leading a wonderfully successful project called Smash the Crash. Smash the Crash is a student-faculty initiative studying and preventing bird-window collisions. The project's team of 5 faculty members, 14 students, and 5 community partners has been monitoring buildings on campus to help make UR more bird-safe.
This fall, the team documented 58 bird collisions in just 7 weeks! After a recent presentation to University Facilities, Fadok and his team will now be working together with Facilities to retrofit buildings with bird-safe solutions and update design standards. They’re also excited about collaborating with students from former HC fellow and UR faculty member Mizin Shin’s class on innovative bird-safe vinyl films for the Sage Art Center.
While a few details are still being ironed out, we’re thrilled to see this important project moving forward. For more information and updates visit their website: https://www.smashthecrashur.com
