Advising—Pre-Health
Chemistry Roadmaps for Pre-health Majors
The information provided here is to help guide students who intend to major in a pre-health program, which may require four semesters of college chemistry on their transcript. Students should consult with their pre-health advisor to see if this requirement applies to them.
| First Semester | Second Semester | Third Semester | Fourth Semester |
|---|---|---|---|
| CHEM 131 | CHEM 132 | CHEM 203 | CHEM 204 |

Students who take CHEM 131 during the fall of their first-year
It is suggested that students who enroll in CHEM 131: Chemical Concepts, Systems, and Practices I follow the plan below.
- Take CHEM 132: Chemical Concepts, Systems, and Practices II during the spring semester of their first-year.
- Take CHEM 203: Organic Chemistry I during the fall semester of their sophomore year.
- Take CHEM 204: Organic Chemistry II during the spring semester of their sophomore year.
Students who use AP Exam scores for credit for CHEM 131
It is suggested that students who use AP Exam scores to earn credit for CHEM 131: Chemical Concepts, Systems, and Practices I follow the plan below.
- Take CHEM 132: Chemical Concepts, Systems, and Practices II during the spring semester of their first-year.
- Take CHEM 203: Organic Chemistry I during the fall semester of their sophomore year.
Take CHEM 204: Organic Chemistry II AND BIOL 250: Biochemistry (with lab) during the spring semester of their sophomore year.
Students who use AP Exam scores to place into CHEM 171 during the fall of their first year
It is suggested that students who use AP Exam scores to place into CHEM 171: First-year Organic Chemistry follow the plan below as they still need two semesters of general chemistry with a lab component.
- Take CHEM 172: First-year Organic Chemistry II during the spring semester of their first-year.
- Take BIOL 250: Biochemistry (with lab) during the spring semester of their sophomore year.
- Take CHEM 132: Chemical Concepts, Systems, and Practices II EITHER during the spring semester of their first-year or the spring semester of their sophomore year.
OR
Take CHEM 231: Chemical Instrumentation during the fall semester of their sophomore year. This course is appropriate for the General Chemistry requirement.
