Research Advising

Given his role as Director of URPSC, Dr. Cohen does not accept graduate students into a formal research lab. Instead, Dr. Cohen looks forward to supporting graduate students in the context of clinical teaching and training.

Overview and Current Role

Dr. Andrew Cohen is a Pediatric Psychologist licensed in New York State and Associate Professor in the Departments of Psychology (SAS) and Pediatrics (SMD) at the University of Rochester.

Dr. Cohen serves as Director of University of Rochester Psychological Services Center (URPSC)—a nonprofit training and research clinic for the Clinical Psychology program within the Department of Psychology. In this role, Dr. Cohen oversees clinical service delivery, training and supervision of doctoral graduate clinicians, and integration of clinical science with community-based mental health practice. URPSC serves children, adolescents, young adults, and families in the Greater Rochester area. It offers low-cost, evidence-based, and culturally responsive services to the public while preparing the next generation of professional psychologists.

With over two decades of experience, Dr. Cohen has collaborated with interdisciplinary teams, healthcare systems, school districts, and community agencies to support individuals and families facing a wide range of behavioral health concerns. At URPSC, he applies his expertise in behavioral health integration to a training clinic model that highlights the intersection of mental and physical health, family and community strengths, and structural factors that impact equitable access to care.

Training and Early Career

Dr. Cohen earned his doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Auburn University, completed a child and adolescent psychology internship at the University of Rochester Medical Center in 2009, and completed a pediatric psychology fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic in 2010.

After formal training, from 2010-2013, he joined SUNY Downstate Medical Center as the embedded psychologist within the Pediatric HIV Clinic. From 2013 to 2016, he served as Co-Director of Training for the Pediatric Psychology Fellowship at Arkansas Children’s Hospital, where he advanced initiatives in integrated clinical care, interdisciplinary teaching, and program development. These early experiences shaped his enduring interests in health psychology, equitable care, and sustainable training program design.

Leadership in Behavioral Health Integration

In 2017, Dr. Cohen was recruited back to Rochester to expand behavioral health integration within the Department of Pediatrics. From 2017 to 2024, he served as Director of Behavioral Health Integration & Collaborative Care for Golisano Children’s Hospital Pediatric Practice, a safety-net primary care clinic serving over 14,000 patients. In this capacity, he directed an interdisciplinary team of psychologists, psychiatric providers, staff clinicians, trainees, and care manager. Under his leadership, the program grew from 1.5 to 8 full-time equivalents (FTEs) and provided care to more than 2,000 underserved youth and families each year. This work laid the foundation for his current leadership at URPSC, where he brings the same focus on integration, equity, and training into a university-based training clinic.

Focus on Training, Equity, and Community Engagement

Dr. Cohen is a dedicated mentor who has supervised and trained numerous mental health trainees (master’s, predoctoral, internship, postdoctoral) and staff clinicians in integrated behavioral health care. He emphasizes a collaborative, strengths-based approach that prepares students and staff to address emotional and behavioral concerns within complex family, cultural, and systemic contexts.

At URPSC, Dr. Cohen directs a clinical training environment that is evidence-based, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of diverse clients and communities. Graduate clinicians provide services under his supervision, gaining experience across the lifespan and working with clients who present with a wide range of concerns (e.g., anxiety, depression, behavior, grief / loss, interpersonal). The clinic’s dual mission—high-quality training and accessible community services—reflects his commitment to shaping a future workforce prepared to deliver culturally informed and contextually grounded care. Through this work, Dr. Cohen continues to bridge science, training, and practice while preparing clinicians to meet the needs of diverse and underserved communities.
