Psychology Department Awards
Internal awards are presented to graduate students in December each year. The most recent recipients are listed below each award.
Alfred Baldwin Award
Presented to Ellen Kneeskern.
This award recognizes a graduate student for important contributions in a program of research while enrolled at the University of Rochester. Winners must have demonstrated significant promise and potential for future independent contributions to psychological research.
Community Engagement and Enrichment Award
Presented to Leena Twal and Emily Speybroeck.
The Community Engagement and Enrichment Award aims to recognize contributions to enhancing engagement within the department of psychology and enriching collaboration between the community and the department.
Dr. Herbert C. Fink Award
Presented to Ethan Wasche and Claire Shimshock.
This award recognizes significant contributions to the field of social-personality psychology. Winners are selected for having shown promise as independent scholars within the field and having demonstrated a committment to research.
Emory L. Cowen Award
Presented to Vanessa Cao and Kaitlyn Kaiser.
This award is given to a graduate student who has first-authored the best article in a high-quality psychology journal in a given year. The article must either be published or accepted for publication at the time of consideration.
Fred Rogosch Award
Presented to Carson Kautz-Turnbull.
This award is given to a graduate student or post-doctoral fellow who has made significant contributions to the field of developmental psychology. Winners are selected for having shown promise as independent scholars within the field and having demonstrated a committment to research.
Helen and Vincent Nowlis Award
Presented to Karishma Singh.
This award recognizes a graduate student for having demonstrated excellence in teaching and mentoring. Consideration is given to service as a teaching assistant, instructor and supervisor of research and clinical activities at either the undergraduate or graduate level.
Lisa Flanagan Grossman Memorial Award
Presented to Leena Twal.
This award honors a student’s commitment to the work at the Mt. Hope Family Center, the families served, and to development of knowledge in the field of child abuse and its prevention.
External Awards and Grants
Diversity Travel Award from the International Society of Autism Research
Awarded to Christina Layton in February 2024.
The International Society of Autism Research (INSAR) provides up to 45 Diversity/Low Income Countries Travel Awards to individuals who are members of INSAR studying in or working in autism research in health-related institutions.
F31 NRSA Fellowship from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism
Awarded to Maddy Rockhold in March 2024.
Love Consortium Graduate Student Gratitude Grant
Awarded to Claire Shimshock in February 2024.
The Love Consortium provides up to 10 graduate student research awards of $10,000 each to test a proposed hypothesis about gratitude using data described in its Global Gratitude Dataverse project.
National Research Service Award Predoctoral Fellowship from the National Institute of Mental Health
Awarded to Vanessa Cao in March 2024.
Society for Affective Science Diversity Travel Grant
Awarded to Gwyneth DeLap in February 2024.
The Society for Affective Science awards grants to graduate students and postdoctoral researchers whose background adds to the diversity of the field of affective science.
Top Poster Award: University of Rochester Graduate Research Symposium
Awarded to Princeton Chee in March 2024.
The University's annual research symposium, which showcases research by graduate students across the disciplines, features a poster session with monetary awards for posters selected by AS&E faculty and staff judges.
