Issues of data analysis in experimental research. The course focuses on parametric techniques, specifically analysis of variance. Topics covered include simple and complex designs for between and within subjects factors, including mixed designs; analysis of covariance and trend and contrasts. The course includes a lab in which students are taught to use a popular statistical package for data analysis.

Successfully navigating the world requires learning how to make reasonable estimates about what other people might be thinking and feeling. In this seminar, we will discuss how children come to think about themselves and others in terms of their mental states (e.g., desires, thoughts, beliefs, emotions, preferences, knowledge, expectations). The course will also highlight, however, that mental state understanding is a lifelong process that does not end when we hit a specified level of understanding. This seminar will be heavily focused on critically evaluating methodological choices and what these decisions mean for what we know about people’s thinking about mind and emotion.

In recent years, intervention science has emerged as an influential area of psychological research. Rooted in diverse theories and methods that date as far back as Kurt Lewin’s pioneering work in the early 20th century, intervention science applies psychological principles to influence people’s beliefs and behavior in ways that benefit them, the organizations they are part of, and/or the broader society. In doing so, it yields practicable solutions to challenging social problems while also informing theory in ways that complement correlational and laboratory methods. In this course, we will learn about (a) the unique intellectual tradition that shapes how intervention scientists think, (b) the theoretical perspectives and frameworks that undergird the design of effective interventions, (c) intervention methods that have been successful in changing real-world outcomes, and (d) methods to design and evaluate these types of interventions. The primary outcome of this course will be a detailed proposal for an intervention that addresses an issue or question in your specific area of study and thus builds on your existing area of research. To accomplish this goal, this course will consist of weekly readings, active engagement in (and facilitation of) class discussions, and midterm and final projects in which you will use principles from the course to propose psychological interventions that address pressing societal issues. These elements are designed to reinforce one another and help you hone a strong skillset in the development and evaluation of social-psychological interventions.
