This graduate-level course examines the origin of states, the development of state capacity, and interstate relations in the long-run global context. It will cover topics such as applications of state capacity theory to settings outside of Eurasia; international systems in the pre-Westphalian world; and pan-nationalist and internationalist movements in the modern era. Students will critically evaluate classic works of the state formation literature paired with newer work and empirical evidence from less-covered settings. They will develop original research and gain experience giving peer feedback and working in collaborative research settings.
