Overview

Student in Stacks

The Department of English is devoted to the study of literature, media, and creative arts. We offer courses in all periods and genres of English, American, and Anglophone literature—poetry, fiction, non-fiction, and drama—as well as a wide array of classes in creative writing, film, media studies, journalism, rhetoric, and theater.

Majors, Minors, and Clusters

Majors choose one of four tracks in the English major:

Minors are available in the following areas:

  • Creative writing
  • English literature
  • Journalism
  • Theater

It is possible for students who are majoring in one of the English tracks to complete an English minor in another area for a joint major and minor.

The English Department is home to a wide variety of clusters in the humanities.

Students with questions about any of these programs should contact the department’s director of undergraduate studies.
