Behind the Test Tube: Q&A
Jeff Tschirhart—Department Administrator

What do you like to do when not in the department?
South Lyon, MI, or just outside of Ann Arbor, MI
Why did you choose chemistry as a career?
I was previously the administrator for the Writing, Speaking, and Argument Program and the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences. Chemistry, being a larger department, allows me to work on more initiatives compared to the other departments.
What is your proudest accomplishment while at the URochester?
Ensuring the departments I’ve managed operate effectively.
What do you like to do when not in the department?
Nap
A Rochester must?
Irondequoit has a lot of nice places: the lake, hiking trails, SeaBreeze, the Seneca Park Zoo, and the oldest putt-putt course in the US.
Feast/meal of the times? Details, please!
Pizzelles over the winter holidays. My grandpa used to make them all the time.
An inspiring book/movie /show? We are really curious as to why!
It’s not really inspiring, but I like Hyperion by Dan Simmons. It has a sense of unavoidable impending doom to it.
The goal of this initiative is to highlight the diversity of backgrounds and perspectives in the Department of Chemistry and help our community develop stronger connections and synergies. You can think of these spotlights as the beginning of a conversation that we very much hope you will continue in the corridors of Hutch and beyond.
