Behind the Test Tube: Q&A
Emily Breitbart—Graduate Program Coordinator
Where is home/where did you grow up?
Saratoga Springs, NY
Why did you choose our department?
I felt like I would be a good fit for the department after speaking with faculty, staff, and graduate students in my interviews. The people are kind, thoughtful, and motivated to create positive change at the university-level and beyond.
Proudest accomplishment while at the University of Rochester?
Supporting students throughout their time in the chemistry graduate program. Getting a PhD is hard work and I enjoy being a helpful resource to students during what can be a challenging time.
What do you like to do when not in the department?
I recently started learning how to play the cello after playing the viola for ~25 years. I also enjoy reading, being outdoors, playing tennis, and exploring all the different neighborhoods around Rochester.
A Rochester must?
Attending a classical music concert at Eastman, Rochester Public Market, and walking down Park Avenue.
Feast/meal of the times? Details, please!
I highly recommend Ardor Park Artisanal Pizza. The food is from local farms and everything is made from scratch. I also love Chortke Grill for mediterranean food.
An inspiring book/movie/show? We are really curious as to why!
I thought Greta Gerwig’s Barbie was phenomenal. It was thought-provoking while also being funny and relatable The Descendants, Postcards from the Edge, and Inside Out are also worth seeing.
My favorite shows include: Curb Your Enthusiasm, Broad City, and The Great British Baking Show.
Books: Hello, Molly! A Memoir, by Molly Shannon, was so much fun. I also loved Adult Drama: And Other Essays by Natalie Beach and The Rules Do Not Apply by Ariel Levy.
The goal of this initiative is to highlight the diversity of backgrounds and perspectives in the Department of Chemistry and help our community develop stronger connections and synergies. You can think of these spotlights as the beginning of a conversation that we very much hope you will continue in the corridors of Hutch and beyond.
