Applications Open for Fall 2026 Graduate Admission in Linguistics

The Department of Linguistics at the University of Rochester is now accepting applications for Fall 2026 entry to its four graduate programs:
PhD in Linguistics
MA in Linguistics
MA in Language Documentation and Description (LDD)
MS in Computational Linguistics
A Collaborative, Research-Driven Department
URochester’s Linguistics programs combine rigorous theoretical training with a strong emphasis on empirical research. Faculty expertise spans syntax, semantics, pragmatics, phonetics, phonology, morphology, sociolinguistics, and computational linguistics. Students benefit from the department’s cross-disciplinary collaboration with researchers in Computer Science, Data Science, Brain and Cognitive Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, and the Eastman School of Music.
Graduate students work closely with faculty on independent and collaborative research, gaining experience that prepares them for advanced study and careers in academia, education, technology, and beyond. Many students also have the opportunity to serve as research or teaching assistants.
Our Graduate Programs
PhD in Linguistics
A fully funded program offering comprehensive training across formal and empirical areas of linguistics. The PhD emphasizes creativity and interdisciplinary exploration, encouraging students to engage deeply with linguistic theory and data-driven research.
Application deadline: December 1, 2025.
MA in Linguistics
A 32-credit program that provides a strong foundation in the core areas of theoretical and experimental linguistics. The MA is ideal preparation for doctoral study or careers that value analytical and communication skills.
MA in Language Documentation and Description (LDD)
A 32-credit hands-on program focused on documenting and analyzing under-studied and endangered languages. Students gain practical experience in fieldwork, corpus development, and language analysis while contributing to the preservation of linguistic diversity.
MS in Computational Linguistics
A 32-credit interdisciplinary program combining linguistics and computer science in equal measure. Students develop skills in programming, data analysis, and natural language processing, preparing them for careers in tech and research or for continued study at the PhD level.

Applicants with strong academic records, a passion for language, and intellectual curiosity are encouraged to apply. A background in linguistics is not required for admission.
