July 2018 – Clubes de Ciencia in Latin America
David Vargas (2nd year grad) traveled to Colombia to participate to Clubes de Ciencia (Science Clubs), an outreach program that aims at developing the next generation of scientists in Latin American countries. The program impacted more than 6500 students from six different countries. David developed and taught an interactive class in which students had the opportunity to learn concepts of chemistry and biochemistry and apply them in hands-on experiments in the laboratory. As part of our latest outreach efforts, our laboratory has hosted a group of 12 science-enthusiastic students from Brighton High School. Our visitors had a lot of fun running experiments and learning about chemistry and biocatalysis. See them in action here. March 20, 2018 – Antonio Tinoco's oral presentation at the 255 ACS meeting
Antonio Tinoco presented his research at the 255th ACS National Meeting with a talk entitled "Asymmetric synthesis of trifluoromethyl-substituted cyclopropanes via myoglobin-catalyzed transfer of trifluoromethylcarbene". He was also interviewed by the Chemical & Engineering News magazine (see C&EN podcast minute 32 to 38).

Eric Moore participated and gave a talk at the 255th ACS National Meeting, in which he presented his latest results on a new strategy for enzyme stabilization based on computationally guided protein stapling.

Vikas' paper has been published in Bioorganic & Medicinal Chemistry. This work describes the further development and application of a chemoenzymatic strategy to afford a series of new analogs of parthenolide functionalized at the aliphatic positions C9 and C14. Moreover several of these derivatives were able to kill leukemia cells with improved activity compared to parthenolide. Check the paper out. Great job Vikas!

This work describes a novel strategy for the production of side-chain-to-tail cyclic peptides from ribosomally derived polypeptide precursors O-2-aminoethyl-tyrosine, which is generated upon quantitative, post-translational reduction of the azido-containing counterpart, O-2-azidoethyl-tyrosine, directly in E. coli cells. Jul 01, 2013 – Rudi Fasan wins the Tetrahedron Young Investigator Award for Bioorganic and Medicinal Chemistry 2014
This award has been created in 2005 by the Executive Board of Editors and the Publisher of Tetrahedron Publications and is presented to two individuals who have exhibited "exceptional creativity and dedication" in the fields of Bioorganic/ Medicinal Chemistry and Organic Synthesis respectively. Rudi will present a plenary lecture during the 15th Tetrahedron Symposium in London (June, 24-27, 2014) and in Singapore (October 28-31, 2014). Furthermore, a Symposium-in-Print issue will be published in his honor in the journal Bioorganic and Medicinal Chemistry.
