Warsaw Ghetto Uprising
The Warsaw Ghetto was the largest of all the Jewish ghettos in Nazi-occupied Europe during World War II. The Nazis’ attempt to carry out a final liquidation of the Ghetto by sending all of its residents to extermination camps led to the armed uprising that began on April 19, 1943. It was a hopeless but powerfully symbolic act of Jewish defiance against their oppressors. Marek Edelman, a leading participant in the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, gives a daily account of events from April 19 through May 10, 1943. The narrator survived the Holocaust, became a successful cardiologist in post-War Poland, and was a Solidarity representative in the 1989 Round Table Talks. Edelman was 23 years old when the events he recounts took place, and became the leader of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising after the death of Mordechaj Anielewicz. His narration is juxtaposed with documentary material - footage shot by Germans in the Warsaw Ghetto in 1943. Edelman's narration is augmented by Dylewska's poetic use of slow-motion and freeze-frame film techniques applied to documentary material.

In Polish with English subtitles.

Panel discussion will follow the screening.
