Penderecki: The Avant-garde, or Romanticist?
Sunday, April 14, 3:00 pm

Celebration of the 80th birthday of one of the greatest Polish composers in our time, Krzysztof Penderecki
Eunmi Ko (piano), Sini Virtanen (violin), and Julia Shulman (double bass)

Krzysztof Penderecki
The concert will begin with an introduction and demonstration of the unusual string technique that Penderecki used in his famous Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima (1960). The audience will have an inside peek at what is going on in the string orchestra while playing. After experiencing the Avant-garde Penderecki, the players will move to the Romanticist Penderecki, performing his Sonata for Violin and Piano (1999). Comparing the two, the audience will hear both tradition and revolution. This concert will be fascinating for music lovers and accessible to audience members less familiar with classical music.
