Conference activities

Pre-conference outing
We will meet at the George Eastman Museum at 15:00 on July 21st. George Eastman was the founder of Kodak and an important American inventor, business person, and philanthropist. He was also one of the main founders of the University of Rochester.

Tickets can be purchased in advance or on-site. Tickets are $20 for adult nonmembers. The conference will pay for students on-site.

We can take in the collection and the grounds for a couple of hours. Then there are nearby bars and restaurants for a sociable evening.

The Eastman Museum is about a one hour walk from the library. I will walk there with anyone who wishes to stretch their legs. We will meet on the main library steps at 13:45 and depart just before 14:00. If you don’t wish to walk, I recommend using a car share. It’s about a fifteen minute drive from the campus area, including the two conference hotels.

Conference dinner
The conference dinner will be held at Lento Restaurant in the Neighborhood of the Arts. We will order from an à la carte menu, which includes good vegetarian and vegan options. The dinner will be subsidized by the conference.

More information about the conference dinner will be emailed out to in-person attendees.

Accommodation

There are two hotel options that are walking distance to the university/conference site, Hilton Garden Inn Rochester University & Medical Center (aka “Hilton College Town”; map) and Staybridge Suites Rochester University (map; note that there is a footbridge to the university right by this hotel).

There are a block of rooms at the Hilton for the conference at the rate of $199/night. Mention CLS/LFG23 and state the promised rate when you reserve. This is the general University of Rochester rate. Note that the rooms have two beds, so are suitable for sharing.

If you wish to stay at the Staybridge, reserve using this link for a 10% discount compared to regular rates. There are a variety of room types.

If you wish to stay in town, there are many alternatives, but you might want to consider one of the following, as these are close to the university shuttle:

Hilton Garden Inn Downtown
Holiday Inn Downtown
Marriott Courtyard Downtown
