The problem of misinformation in mainstream media and social media seems particularly significant during a crisis such as the coronavirus pandemic, the ongoing war in Ukraine, or a national political campaign, and it is a global phenomenon that has similar contours in Poland and the United States. The lecture will discuss a 2020 study of fake news in Poland, compare the US and Polish fake news landscapes, and discuss the psychological and political impact of misinformation in social media. It will describe the characteristics of fake news, the types of persuasion and manipulation that are employed, and when we are most susceptible to deception.
