We are excited to share the inspiring journey of Jeffrey Gilliam, a distinguished alumnus of the University of Rochester Eastman School of Music. Jeffrey graduated as valedictorian in 1981, studying piano under the esteemed Cécile Genhart. His path took a transformative turn when his German professor, Ruth V. Gross, encouraged him to apply for the Cologne Fellowship. With nothing to lose, Jeffrey took a leap of faith—a decision that would forever change his future.

The Cologne Fellowship opened doors for Jeffrey, allowing him to receive a Fulbright travel scholarship in German literature, which was renewed twice. His European recital debut in 1982 was a direct result of his continued studies with Wilhelm Hecker and Günter Ludwig in Cologne, Germany. During his time in Cologne, Jeffrey first lived with a host family and subsequently in a dormitory, immersing himself in the rich cultural and musical landscape.

He served as faculty at the International Menuhin Music Academy in Switzerland for fourteen years, taught an accompanying course at the Juilliard School, and was an assistant professor of Piano at the University of Michigan School of Music. In 1992, he joined the faculty at Western Washington University (WWU), where he continues to inspire students today.

His love for travel and teaching, sparked by his time in Cologne, led him to guest professorships at the University of Pretoria, in South Africa and Silpakorn Fine Arts University in Bangkok, Thailand. In 2005, Jeffrey received his second Fulbright, a Senior Specialist Award for performance and teaching in Thailand. The following year, he accompanied the Asian recital debut of WWU soprano alumna Erin Wall in Tokyo, Japan.

In gratitude for the opportunities that the Cologne Fellowship provided, Jeffrey has contributed to the fund over the past two years. His contributions help pave the way for the next generation of students to embark on their own transformative journeys.

We invite you to join Jeffrey and other alumni in supporting the Cologne Fellowship Fund. Your donation will help provide invaluable opportunities for talented students to pursue their dreams and make a lasting impact in the world.
