The Communities of the Dene Speech Atlas
Dene communities are linked to this site and to the language(s) spoken in that community. Through the DSA, information is available about the Dene languages, their sound inventories and orthographies and available resources on the languages and language conservation and documentation.
- Dene Sųłiné is spoken in northern Alberta, Manitoba, eastern Northwest Territories, and Saskatchewan.
- The term Slavey refers to both the North Slavey and South Slavey languages spoken in the Northwest territories. The two groups have slightly different orthographic traditions.
- Tłį Chǫ - Dogrib (NT)
- TsuuT'ina (Sarcee)
For some of the Dene communities, sound examples from speakers and descriptions of the sounds and sound patterns are available. Those communities are underlined. If you are interested in this information, please contact us. Before a community is included on the DSA website, with examples of the speech sounds, consultants in that community are contacted and permissions obtained. Dene communities who do not appear in the list below may also be added to this list and to the Google Earth interface by contacting us.
The Dene Speech Atlas is a work in progress.
